You’re bound to see more electric bikes on the road now that Shimano has released a new e-bike drive unit that’s geared (pun intended) towards the casual/commuter bike market. It’s not as aggressive when it comes to acceleration unlike its more rugged E-800 sibling which we’ve seen on the SyCip Trans-Cascadia Bike but the Shimano says their new STEPS E5000 drive unit is there to take the moderate loads that you’ll encounter in your everyday commute. The drive also responds to feedback so that it gives more power when riders pushes down on the pedals which provides a more natural riding experience. You can pair it with your phone to display riding information such as speed and remaining battery life but you can also pair it with a compatible Shimano display unit.
