Artist Marco Iannicelli explores the ideas of “modernity and trends” with his piece A Maze, a gaming console that uses the classic ancient material of marble to build his own version of a gaming console. He applies his own version of an ancient Celtic maze that users solve with the help of the joystick. “My maze has no end and no beginning in contrast to the Celtic maze that reflects the path between life and death, it has an open epic meaning” Iannicelli explains. “I observed people who played with A Maze and searched the end of the beginning and claimed they knew it but it doesn’t have any. It is interesting to see that people need a beginning and an end to seeking sense in the things they do. But beginning and ends add no extra value to anything. Just enjoy what you do, life is short and I do not believe that time is linear anyway. Our existence is a sum of all our feelings and experiences.” The idea for A Maze came about when someone damaged Iannicelli’s car. “As I held the side mirror of my car in my hands, I liked how the mirror tilts in different directions. That is what inspired me to create the tilting maze plate and all the other elements just fell into place” he said. People can experience A Maze when it’s part of an exhibition and when asked what he wants users to feel when they use it, Iannicelli says, “I want them to enjoy the simple game. It is relaxing, costs little effort once you get used to the movements and momentum of the plate, the joystick and the ball. It can be meditative, hypnotic, amazing, challenging or even boring. It is what you make of it. But it carries a lot of connotations and if people see beyond the game and understand those things I feel satisfied. Visit MarcoIannicelli.com
